If you work on Windows: first of all, get FAR Manager, and familiarize yourself with a few hotkeys: Ctrl+Enter (Copy Filename), Ctrl+F (Copy Filename With Path), Ctrl+O (Panels On/Off), Alt+F9 (Maximize), Alt+<letter> (Search As You Type), Ctrl-PgUp (Go To Parent Directory), Alt+F7 (Find Files [Containing...]). They will be your best friend.

Selected programmer's editors for Windows (shareware):

Selected editors for Linux:

  • Kate. Linux only.
  • Emacs/ XEmacs. Actually cross platform, and you might say it's an IDE, depending on your views...
  • Vim, also available for Windows
