Abstract:
There is a growing interest in using object-oriented analysis and design techniques in conjunction with UML to develop large complex systems. This paper presents an iterative approach for studying the timing constraints of a system-of-systems using models expressed in UML for Realtime extension (UML-RT), which are then translated into coarse-grained simulation models that are exercised using the OMNeT++ simulation engine. The integration of the UML-RT models with simulation models provides a seamless process for rapidly constructing executable prototypes for the purpose of analyzing timing constraints and deriving system requirements from those constraints. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated with a case study of the sensor-netting capability of a missile defense system.
